• UW Educational Outreach reduces IT energy use by 80 percent, April 5, 2010
  In its drive toward sustainable practices across the organization, the University of Washington Educational Outreach (UWEO) IT department has achieved an annual energy savings of 80 percent by moving to virtual servers. That equates to saving 640,000 kilowatt hours per year, reducing carbon emissions by 484 tons.

• National Science Foundation Awards $975,000 for UW Research Enabling Computers to Understand Human Languages, May 9, 2008
  Emily Bender, Assistant Professor and Director, UW Professional Master’s Program in Computational Linguistics, and faculty member Fei Xia have each received awards for their work in natural language technology. Commercial applications of natural language technology include  voice recognition, biomedical informatics, context sensitive advertising, and search engine technology.
• Bar Raised on Education Standards for Certified Professional Guardians, March 6, 2008
  Applicants for the role of Certified Professional Guardian (CPG) in Washington State--those appointed by the courts to manage the medical, financial, legal, and personal affairs of incapacitated adults--will soon receive substantially expanded training as a pre-requisite for certification. University of Washington has been chosen by the CPG Board as sole training provider.

  Addressing the critical training challenge posed by aircraft composites, the materials used to build the 787 Dreamliner, Boeing celebrated its corporate-university educational partnership with the UW by honoring more than 80 engineers and technical professionals at a graduation ceremony for the University of Washington-Boeing Certificate Programs in Composite Materials and Modern Aircraft Structures.
