  University of Washington Joins edX to Provide More Free Online Courses Courses Will Increase Access to UW Expertise Through MOOCs (Seattle, WA) May 21, 2013 Today the University of Washington (UW) announced a new partnership with edX, the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) provider from Harvard/MIT.
• UW Launches New Undergraduate Online Degree Completion Program with Early Childhood and Family Studies Degree, March 27, 2013
  Two important trends in higher education have come together at the University of Washington, as officials announced a new online degree completion program featuring a degree targeting early childhood education. The program will begin accepting applications in May, with classes starting this fall.

  The University of Washington will offer a new low-cost online bachelor's degree completion program in early childhood and family studies. Pending final approval, the program will start in the fall.
• Call for Nominations: 2013 UW Lifelong Learning Award, December 11, 2012
  Nominations are open for the 2013 UW Distinguished Contributions to Lifelong Learning Award. This annual award honors UW faculty who have taught or designed courses, seminars or workshops aimed at nonmatriculated working adults and other nontraditional students, and who have received excellent teaching evaluations for that work.

• UW Educational Outreach reduces IT energy use by 80 percent, April 5, 2010
  In its drive toward sustainable practices across the organization, the University of Washington Educational Outreach (UWEO) IT department has achieved an annual energy savings of 80 percent by moving to virtual servers. That equates to saving 640,000 kilowatt hours per year, reducing carbon emissions by 484 tons.

• National Science Foundation Awards $975,000 for UW Research Enabling Computers to Understand Human Languages, May 9, 2008
  Emily Bender, Assistant Professor and Director, UW Professional Master’s Program in Computational Linguistics, and faculty member Fei Xia have each received awards for their work in natural language technology. Commercial applications of natural language technology include  voice recognition, biomedical informatics, context sensitive advertising, and search engine technology.

  Applicants for the role of Certified Professional Guardian (CPG) in Washington State--those appointed by the courts to manage the medical, financial, legal, and personal affairs of incapacitated adults--will soon receive substantially expanded training as a pre-requisite for certification.
