Approved by the UW Department of Computer Science & Engineering and under the guidance of the eScience Institute.

Gain an in-depth understanding of cloud computing models, applications, platforms, infrastructures and technologies. Acquire a market overview of cloud providers including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google App Engine, and more. Understand the decision-making process for adopting a cloud migration strategy. Learn how to use technologies and development tools (including Eclipse and other IDEs, Heroku, Force.com and Elastic Beanstalk) for cloud application building. Work on projects using frameworks like Hadoop and MapReduce, which enable massive scalability for processing and analyzing large data sets. Learn from guest speakers that range from engineers at startups to enterprise IT managers.

What the Program Covers

• Hands-on experience working with services from major cloud vendors to organize IT resources, build applications and manage data
• Flexibility as needed between attending classes online or in the classroom
• Guest speakers from companies offering cloud services and/or using cloud strategies in their business model
• Cloud computing models: software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), infrastructure as a service (laaS) and database as a service
• Advanced topics including database query optimization, consideration of NoSQL solutions, memory caching, fault tolerance and disaster recovery
