Certificate in Radiation: Sources, Detection, Imaging & Safety

Approved by the UW Department of Physics

Certificates » Radiation: Sources, Detection, Imaging & Safety
Program Features
  • Graduate credits earned in this certificate can be applied to the Master’s in Physics
  • Hands-on lab activities at the Center for Experimental Nuclear and Particle Physics and Astrophysics (CENPA)
  • Individual and team independent study projects that allow you to pursue specific interests in more depth
Who Should Apply
  • Radiation safety officers, accelerator operators, laboratory technicians, medical imaging technicians, manufacturing inspection/quality control technicians, medical or bioscience systems engineers, medical paraprofessionals
  • Working professionals or recent graduates who use or plan to use radiation sources or radiation detectors and imaging in their work and need to learn more about the radiation science underlying the tools and procedures they use
Learn about the physics of radioactive sources including particle accelerators. Understand the principles of operating commonly used radiation detectors and imaging systems, as well as practical applications of such devices. Study the general properties of devices used for medical imaging and learn how to choose the appropriate device for a variety of medical circumstances. Develop your knowledge of radiation safety as you learn how to determine the kinds of measurements needed to assess possible health risks associated with radioactivity and radiation.
Key Outcomes
You will have the fundamental knowledge to generate, measure and use ionizing radiation in the development of ionizing radiation technology in medical and non-medical systems or research systems.
