Behavior Disorders

In this course, students will study the diverse ways in which maladaptive behaviors are conceptualized, the various treatments used toward altering these behaviors, how behaviors are assessed and classified, and will explore some specific behavior disorders. An interdisciplinary approach will be used, covering the biological, neurological, cognitive, behavioral, emotional, personality, developmental, and social underpinnings of behavior problems. Material in this course will build upon what students have learned about the field of abnormal psychology in their Introduction to Psychology class. By the end of this class, students will have acquired a greater and deeper understanding of behavior disorders and issues surrounding this field, including what psychological disorders are and are not, how one's culture and environment may influence the emergence or expression of a disorder, and hopefully will come to appreciate the challenges faced by individuals experiencing these behaviors.
