• Can I take courses through Professional & Continuing Education for academic credit? Can these be applied to a degree?

  UW Professional & Continuing Education courses designated as credit courses may be taken for UW academic credit. Grades earned for these courses are included in grade-point average calculations. All credit courses are recorded on a UW permanent transcript. For credit earned through online learning, see Online Student Handbook: Grades & Transcripts.

  Students who are not pursuing a UW degree can enroll in credit courses by registering through UW Professional & Continuing Education. Admission to a UW degree program (matriculation) is not necessary. Teacher certification candidates will also find courses to help meet certification requirements.

  Enrollment in these classes does not constitute admission to the University of Washington. However, the credits earned may be applied toward a degree should you be admitted to and matriculate in the university at a later date. Forty-five of the final 60 credits of an undergraduate degree program must be completed as an admitted student in residence at the UW.

  To earn graduate credit as a nondegree seeking student, you must be granted graduate nonmatriculated (GNM) status (see below) by an academic unit and the graduate admissions office prior to registration.

  Since the UW is on the quarter system, the credit listed for each course is the quarter credit. Quarter credits divided by 1.5 equal semester credits; semester credits multiplied by 1.5 equal quarter credits.

• How are the different student classifications defined?

  Matriculated students
  These students are formally admitted to UW degree programs. They must fulfill all the university requirements for graduation as outlined in the General Catalog.

  Nonmatriculated students
  These are students who, for any number of reasons, are not admitted into a UW degree program but wish to complete credit courses. They may take credit courses to meet licensing requirements, to develop an educational background leading to matriculation and a degree, to change careers or for personal enrichment. Credit accrued as a nonmatriculated student does not guarantee admission to the university, but may count toward graduation and fulfill requirements if the student is later admitted to an undergraduate degree program. Credit taken as a nonmatriculated student may not be applied toward requirements for a graduate degree (see graduate nonmatriculated students below). Nonmatriculated students have access to the UW libraries and computer centers. However, they are not eligible to receive other campus services such as financial aid or access to the IMA, etc.

  Graduate nonmatriculated (GNM) students
  Graduate nonmatriculated (GNM) defines a student status at the university designed to provide access to graduate courses for qualified post-baccalaureate individuals. GNM students are not currently seeking a graduate degree but may later apply a maximum of 12 credits toward such a degree. Students must meet minimum graduate school admission standards as described in the university's General Catalog. An undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 or equivalent qualification is expected. Individual departments and colleges may have requirements greater than the minimum requirements of the graduate school. Students should contact the academic unit for an application. The deadlines for the submission of all GNM application materials to the GNM office are Sept. 1 for autumn quarter, Dec. 1 for winter quarter, March 1 for spring quarter and May 15 for summer quarter. • How do I obtain graduate credit?
  If you desire graduate credit, you must apply for graduate nonmatriculated (GNM) status and register as a GNM student. Deadlines are determined by the faculty of each graduate program. Visit the Non-Degree Enrollment website for detailed information about GNM status. • Can I enroll in 500-level courses?
  Possession of a baccalaureate degree is a general requirement for enrollment in 500-level courses. Credits earned as a nonmatriculated student cannot be applied later towards a UW graduate degree program.
• What are the UW general education requirements?

  General requirements
  Courses satisfying UW general education requirements are identified in the course listings by the following abbreviations:

  QSR: Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning
  I&S: Individuals and Societies
  NW: The Natural World
  VLPA: Visual, Literary and Performing Arts

  Writing requirements
  There are two types of writing requirements that must be met by most students entering the UW after autumn 1985: a five-credit composition requirement and a W-course requirement. Both requirements can be met by enrolling in the appropriate credit course identified by the following abbreviations:

  C: English Composition
  W: Writing course

  Foreign language proficiency requirement
  The University of Washington has a foreign language requirement that can be met through UW Professional & Continuing Education credit language courses.

• Can high school students take credit courses?

  High school students may be eligible to earn university credit through UW Professional & Continuing Education and UW Online Learning courses. They should contact their high school counselor to determine if enrollment in university-level courses is appropriate and will further their educational goals. • Who do I contact for advising?

  Students who are not admitted to a UW degree program (nonmatriculated students) may seek academic advising for credit courses taken on campus or through online learning. Advisers can help you determine if courses meet your academic goals and explain the nonmatriculated-student registration process.   Graduate nonmatriculated (GNM) students receive academic advising from the graduate coordinator in the appropriate school or college. Those seeking a first Washington state teaching certificate should contact Student Services, 206 Miller Hall, at 206-543-7833 or edinfo@u.washington.edu.

  If you are a student in a UW degree program (matriculated student), it is best to consult with your regular adviser regarding courses you're taking and their applicability to degree requirements.

• Can I get a Husky Card™ (official UW ID card)?
  The Husky Card is the official identification card for members of the UW community and is available to non-degree students enrolled in academic credit and noncredit courses. The Husky Card serves as your library card to all UW libraries and may qualify you for student discounts at UW events, museums and the University Book Store rebate program. All Husky Cards are automatically linked to a debit account which can be used to pay for printing at campus computer labs, campus dining facilities to pay for meals, and paying for parking at various lots on campus. For a complete list of services and information on adding funds to your card, please visit the Husky Card Account website. (https://www.hfs.washington.edu/huskycard/Default.aspx?id=609) The Husky Card Account & ID Center is located on the ground floor of Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Their office hours are Monday-Friday, 8 am -5 pm. You will need to know your student ID number and take a U.S. state or federally-issued photo identification such as a driver’s license or passport in order to get a Husky Card. ONLY students enrolled in classroom-based academic credit courses have the option of purchasing a U-PASS (see Getting Around).
• Can I purchase a U-PASS?

  Students taking campus credit courses through UW Professional & Continuing Education, and English Language Programs (ELP) students in credit or noncredit courses on the main campus or in downtown Seattle may purchase a U-PASS. More information is available on the Getting Around page.
