About this Program

In this certificate program, you’ll prepare to teach English as a foreign language. You’ll study language acquisition theory, explore the latest research on teaching methods and learn to manage and organize your classroom and your classroom activities.

Note: This professional certificate is not equivalent to an endorsement or certification to teach in Washington state public schools.


  • Instructors of English language learners in K-12 and adult settings worldwide
  • Native speakers of English who wish to work internationally teaching English
  • International students studying in the U.S. who wish to teach English overseas

  • Workshops with expert UW English language instructors and guest lecturers from the EFL field
  • Class observations and facilitation exercises in UW ESL classes
