About this Course
This course looks in detail at common types of available health care data, along with different types of analytic tools used to report from that data. Class topics are considered from both a technical viewpoint (such as how diagnosis codes are captured and stored) and an analytic and reporting viewpoint (how diagnosis codes are used to turn data into useful information). Supplied data sets give students the opportunity to explore the data in more detail through in-class exercises and homework assignments.
Topics include:
- Health care concepts and terminology
- Types of health care data
- Use of health care data for operations and management, quality, benchmarking, performance improvement, outcomes assessment and marketing
- Health Information Exchange (HIE), Patient Portals, HL7 and EHRs
- Population health management
- Legal issues (HIPAA, fraud, lawsuits aimed at bad analysis)
- Advanced Excel and introduction to databases
