About this Course


In this course, we'll begin with a review of the basics of spatial data modeling, including vector and raster data types. Then we’ll proceed to a consideration of attribute data and relational databases and how they are extended to incorporate complex spatial elements. We'll also cover data acquisition, the basics of data-gathering instrumentation, data sources, data quality and techniques to discover and resolve common data errors.

In hands-on exercises and discussions, you’ll consider how you can use GIS software to create and maintain geographic databases and integrate geographic data compiled from varied sources.

  • How to identify data from a variety of GIS and non-GIS formats
  • How to define file-based and enterprise databases, and recognize appropriate applications for each 
  • The identification of appropriate data resources and evaluation of their quality for respective mapping and/or analysis projects 
  • How to define and design an initial database schema and build a geodatabase integrating spatial and tabular data from a variety of sources and formats 
  • How to perform data editing and use topology for data integrity
