About this Course

The museum practicum project provides students with the opportunity to apply core concepts learned in all other courses. Students are expected to do a minimum of 25 hours of primarily independent work for an institution under the supervision of a staff member. In addition to the 25 contact hours, students will submit a final report that includes a detailed log of work activities. While the practicum instructor is available to assist in establishing placements, students will create a resume and statement of interest and network with museum professionals to secure their own practicum. Through this process, students will build their professional contacts and get a sense of the perseverance and initiative necessary to land a job in the museum field. Practicum projects may require activity during the normal work week depending on the arrangement made with the museum by the student.

Examples of projects:

  • Implementing a collection registration system
  • Designing a collection storage system
  • Researching a collection
  • Preparing an exhibit or educational program
  • Planning a fundraising event
