About this Course


In this foundational course, you'll get an interdisciplinary overview of wetland science and its associated professional practice. You'll learn wetland definitions and the physical, biological, and chemical characteristics and processes unique to wetlands and wetland functions. The class includes three all-day Saturday field trips to wetland ecosystems in the region.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • The biological, physical, and chemical processes underlying wetland formation and functioning and how wetlands are integral elements of watersheds
  • Basic terminology and vocabulary related to wetland science and ecology and how to use the rich corpus of wetland scientific literature
  • Identification, delineation, classification, rating and assessment of wetlands using standard professional tools
  • The effects of natural and anthropocentric disturbances such as climate change on landscape processes, wetland ecosystems and related aquatic resources
  • Wetland management practices

GET HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE

Collect and interpret field data for soils, hydrology and vegetation.
