Meet the Instructor

Crystal Humphries

Crystal Humphries is a data scientist who has spent the past eight years dissecting large data sets using a range of tools including Perl, Python, R, Hadoop and SQL. She obtained her Ph.D. in human genomics with a focus on Alzheimer's Disease while spearheading a self-teaching group in R programming that has since been turned into a credit course. Her post-doctoral work at the Institute for Systems Biology involved using a combination of supervised and unsupervised learning techniques to derive pre-symptomatic insights for patients.

As a data scientist at  Amazon, Humphries then focused on causal modeling to analyze and identify customer insights from online behavior. She is now at Zymergen, where she uses both her biological and statistical background to design and use algorithms that optimize conditions for experimental modeling of large-scale fermentation processes at a microliter scale.
