Joseph A. Schilz
Web Developer, Office of the University Registrar, University of Washington
After serving a tour in the Marines and pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching, Joseph Schilz began his professional career as a mathematics and technology teacher in tribal southwest Alaska. There he coordinated the direction of instruction and curriculum design as the district secretary of the department of mathematics, helping his students achieve multi-year skill gains using classroom differentiation and technology integration.
A lifelong programmer, Schilz now works as a Web developer at the University of Washington, where he produces open source libraries for accessing the University’s various Web services and the Athens Web framework to help student developers produce maintainable, extensible, secure applications. His contributions to the Python community include presentations at the local Python and API meetups as well as multiple plugins for Django that help developers produce secure Web services.
