David Liu

Staff Machine Learning Engineer, Apple

David Liu is a staff machine learning engineer at Apple, where he works on foundational model fine-tuning. He specializes in aligning large language models using supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning techniques to improve factuality, grounding and reasoning.

Liu has more than 15 years of experience building machine learning systems at companies ranging from early-stage startups to large enterprises. He previously co-founded two AI startups — CarrotCake AI and Bearing AI — and was an early ML engineer at Moveworks. He's also led engineering teams through scale-up and fundraising phases, deploying production-grade AI systems in real-world applications. Liu holds master’s degrees in computer science and electrical engineering from Stanford University and enjoys mentoring and teaching the next generation of ML practitioners.
