Shawn Chai

Staff Data Scientist, Apple

Shawn Chai is a staff data scientist at Apple, where he focuses on the data science work for foundational Large Language Models (LLMs). Prior to Apple, he was a principal data scientist lead at Microsoft, where he led building and evaluating on-device AI/ML solutions for the Windows operating system. Before that, he was a statistician at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, where his work centered on clinical trials and high-dimensional genomics.

Chai has more than 15 years of experience as a data scientist, statistician and data science manager. He collaborates with business executives, software developers, product managers, creative designers and scientific researchers. Academically, Chai has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers, which have been cited more than 3,600 times. He has a master’s in statistics from Oregon State University.
