At UW Professional & Continuing Education, we’re always working on new courses and programs that meet the evolving needs of those who never stop learning. This year, we’ve developed four new certificate programs and two new courses to help you find your path to success.

The new offerings cover a diverse range of subjects, including technology, UX design, and business, and range in length from nine weeks to eight months. Read on to find the right program or course for you. 


certificate in human resources essentials 

Skilled human resources professionals play an important role in tackling the challenge of attracting, hiring and retaining great employees, and they are in high demand today — especially in the Seattle area. In this 3-course certificate program, you'll learn the foundational competencies required to succeed as an HR professional and acquire the knowledge and skills needed to break into this dynamic field.

"HR skills are very widely used and transferable — you can be in the HR function in any industry, from very small companies to very large companies," said Rubert Bader, senior director of people analytics at Expedia and an instructor for the Certificate in Human Resources Essentials. "The certificate provides a really strong skillset to have
 when you're starting out."

Certificate in UX & Visual Interface Design

The innovative field of user experience design is growing by leaps and bounds, especially in the booming tech sector. This accelerated, three-course program provides you with the cutting edge UX skills to create rich interactive experiences — user-centered design thinking, prototyping, usability testing, content strategy and more.

“These kinds of skills are in high demand right now, and the job market is only going to get stronger,” said program manager Paula McArdle. “This certificate program offers a deep dive into the UX discipline, and students will also complete a capstone project they can add to their portfolio and show to potential employers.”

Certificate in Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership

This unique certificate is designed for women interested in starting or growing their own small or mid-sized business, or who are part of an early-stage company. In this accelerated, two-course program, you’ll explore the fundamental principles of entrepreneurship and then craft and implement a business plan in collaboration with an existing company.

“We’re seeing more and more women launching their own businesses today, especially in the thriving startup culture in Seattle,” said program manager Ben Starsky. “Earning the certificate will give women the knowledge and skills they need to be a part of the startup world. It’ll also give them the chance to network and learn from other entrepreneurs and startup professionals.”

Certificate in English for Business Networking

This professional certificate program was developed with the help of our International & English Language Programs instructors and is made available through the edX learning platform. The four-course online program is designed for non-native English language speakers who want to learn and practice their business networking techniques.

Students will work on conversational skills, email dos and don’ts, how to promote themselves, ways to make and maintain business connections, and more.

foundations of software testing

Testing is a vital component of the software development life cycle, and this course is designed to help you understand the role and essential skills of a software tester. The Foundations of Software Testing teaches you how to prevent and detect bugs, how to use the various test types and development environments, how to develop and use test plans and tracking, and best practices for writing user stories, requirements and specifications.

Network and system administrators are always in demand in this tech-driven world. This course covers the essentials, including scripting techniques, version control, security and other topics. Students will have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned to real-world scenarios. The course can also be used to prepare for our Certificates in Big Data Technologies, Cybersecurity and Ethical Hacking.
