Opening the Door to Opportunity Scholarships Now Available for More UW Certificate Programs

The Pacific Northwest is in the midst of a boom time. For some, that growth readily translates to greater individual success. But for many, right here in our thriving communities, there are hurdles still standing between them and the next step in their career.

That’s why UW Continuum College, which offers more than 80 certificates through UW Professional & Continuing Education, launched the UW Certificate Scholarship program in 2017.

This year, we’re excited not only to continue our scholarship program, but to expand it. Because we believe everyone deserves education to thrive.

BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS

The UW Certificate Scholarship was born from a desire to break down barriers. To make it possible for more people to keep learning and growing, professionally and personally.

“We don’t want to turn people away from education,” said Rovy Branon, vice provost of UW Continuum College, “We’re here to help people access the UW across their lifespans and, hopefully, across their circumstances.”

In fall 2017, 10 deserving students, each working to overcome personal and financial hardships, started their certificate journey with the help of a scholarship. Through their programs, they’re developing skills and confidence in high-demand fields like data science, Python programming and project management. And, most importantly, they’re taking a big step toward achieving their dreams.

INCREASING ACCESS TO IN-DEMAND SKILLS

Thanks to contributions from local businesses, certificate alumni and others in the UW certificate community, we’re expanding the reach of the scholarship program.

This fall, up to 12 local residents who otherwise couldn’t afford it will get the opportunity to boost their careers with a UW certificate — and build a brighter future for themselves, their families and their communities. Awards will range from $2,500 to $5,000, covering most of the program’s costs.

UW Continuum College is committed to expanding access, which is why we’ve not only increased the number of scholarships for 2018 but also broadened the selection of programs eligible for scholarship funds.

We’re now offering income-based scholarship support for our certificates in:

TURNING POTENTIAL INTO POSSIBILITY

“We want our certificate scholarships to be the change agent for people,” said Kate Lorenzen, assistant director of Academic Programs at UW Continuum College. “Last year’s recipients included single parents looking for a better future for themselves and their children, people who’d been laid off and those struggling to get a foot on the ladder in Seattle’s competitive job market.”

Laura Kirch, Certificate in Project Management

Laura Kirch, one of the inaugural scholarship recipients, was nervous about getting back into the job market after being a stay-at-home mom for years. With help from a UW Certificate Scholarship, she started the Certificate in Project Management this past fall.

“I’m embarking on a new chapter for myself and my three children,” Kirch said at the start. “I’m excited to learn new skills and to show my children what determination looks like.”

Kirch, who’s been studying part time in the evenings, is on track to complete her program this June. “Earning this certificate will represent more than an academic accomplishment, more than new professional knowledge,” Kirch said. “It will also represent a badge of courage and tenacity to stay the course and achieve my goals.”
