Life for today’s working professional is extremely busy — and frequently unpredictable. Fitting school in with work, family and other commitments can be quite a challenge.
That’s why we’re offering a new self-paced online learning format for some of our most popular certificates, including programs in data analytics, data science, machine learning, project management and Python programming.
This innovative option, part of the Career Accelerator program, gives students the freedom to study at the pace that works best for them — and still get the same respected credential and high-quality learning experience offered by our other programs.
Learning at Your Own Pace
With the new self-paced online format, you set the schedule. Start anytime and study as much or as little as you want from week to week, completing the coursework at your own speed. You have four months to finish each course, but you can pick up the pace and finish faster if you want.
“The advantage of the self-paced model is that it’s based on an individual’s needs,” said Eliana Medina, an instructional designer and program management director at UW Professional & Continuing Education. “Maybe you don’t have the kind of schedule where you can study every week. With self-paced, you can do it in big chunks, take a short vacation and catch up when you come back, or study whenever you have downtime.”
The self-paced approach features the same expert-developed curriculum as our other formats, with instructor support available all along the way. The certificate cost is same for all learning formats.
We’ve put a lot of thought and effort into making sure our students get the same quality with self-paced learning as they would with any other format.
Paul Del Piero, Assistant Director of Academic Programs
Most programs require you to successfully complete three courses to earn your certificate, though that number can vary. You can take up to two years to complete all the courses in your certificate program.
Support That Helps You Succeed
Just because you’re learning at your own pace doesn’t mean you’re on your own. You have a team behind you.
All self-paced online courses feature an instructional team that gives you comprehensive support throughout your program. Instructors hold weekly virtual office hours, so you can ask questions and get feedback in real time. And instructional assistants monitor your progress, responding to queries and concerns and offering help as needed. You’ll also be able to interact with fellow students through online forums and discussion groups.
It’s all designed to make sure you have the resources you need to stay on track and complete each course while getting the most out of the experience.
“We’ve put a lot of thought and effort into making sure our students get the same quality with self-paced learning as they would with any other format,” said Paul Del Piero, assistant director of academic programs and program manager for the Certificate in Project Management. “With the use of new technologies, instructional assistants and other support features, we’re still able to provide the outstanding educational experience that people expect from the University of Washington.”
