Phonetics & Speech Acoustics (SPHSC 355)

About This Course

In this course, you’ll study the articulatory and acoustic sound features of American English and how spoken language in all its variations can be transcribed broadly and narrowly by clinicians. You’ll also learn how to identify typical articulation patterns and phonetic differences.

What You’ll Learn

  • The relevance of phonetics and speech acoustics to clinical practice of speech-language pathology

  • How to transcribe spoken sentences using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)

  • How to identify the variations in typical speech, dialects of American English, English language learners, developmental speech errors and disordered speech errors
